Care Requirements:
Lighting: Moderate to high (PAR 100-250). Can adapt to different lighting conditions but thrives under stable, moderate-intensity light.
Flow: Moderate to strong; requires good water movement to prevent detritus buildup and encourage polyp extension.
Placement: Middle to upper areas of the tank, away from aggressive corals to avoid chemical warfare.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 76-80°F (24-27°C)
Salinity: 1.025 SG (35 PPT)
pH: 8.1-8.4
Alkalinity: 8-12 dKH
Calcium: 380-450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250-1350 ppm
Feeding & Nutrition:
Toadstool corals primarily rely on photosynthesis but can benefit from occasional feedings of phytoplankton, amino acids, and coral foods to promote growth.
Compatibility & Challenges:
Releases chemical toxins (allelopathy) that can inhibit the growth of nearby corals—use carbon and regular water changes to minimize impact.
Occasionally undergoes shedding (forms a waxy layer and stops extending polyps); this is normal and helps remove debris and algae.
Can grow very large over time, so ensure enough space in your aquascape.
Final Tips:
Provide moderate to strong flow, ensure good water quality, and be patient during shedding periods. With proper care, Toadstool Leather Corals can be a stunning, long-lived addition to a reef tank!
